Warren Buffett increases stake in Tesco
Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway investment firm increased its stake in the world's third biggest retailer from 3.21% to 5.08%, a regulatory filing showed on Thursday . Dated 13 January, the filing came a day after Tesco warned that trading profit for 2012/13 would be flat as the firm stepped up investment in its home market following its worst underlying Christmas sales performance for decades.

Tesco shares fell by as much as 19% on 12 January and hit a 34-month low of 311p on Monday. The shares were up 6p to 327p at the close on Thursday.

Share dealings by Buffet – nicknamed the Sage of Omaha after a string of investments made him among the world's three richest people – are closely watched in financial markets. After buying into Tesco in 2006, he has gradually increased his holding. Last year he caused a stir by saying the companyfirm should "look hard" at its loss-making Fresh & Easy chain in the US, although he said he remained supportive of the business.

On a trip to Japan in November, he said the global financial crisis was creating opportunities in European equities, adding: "We bought Tesco earlier. I can think of a dozen euro stocks that are attractive … there are stocks I like and wonderful businesses. I could buy more Tesco if the price came down."

Our BNSF operation, it should be noted, has certain important economic characteristics that resemble
those of our electric utilities. In both cases we provide fundamental services that are, and will remain, essential to
the economic well-being of our customers, the communities we serve, and indeed the nation. Both will require
heavy investment that greatly exceeds depreciation allowances for decades to come. Both must also plan far
ahead to satisfy demand that is expected to outstrip the needs of the past. Finally, both require wise regulators
who will provide certainty about allowable returns so that we can confidently make the huge investments
required to maintain, replace and expand the plant.
We see a “social compact” existing between the public and our railroad business, just as is the case
with our utilities. If either side shirks its obligations, both sides will inevitably suffer. Therefore, both parties to
the compact should – and we believe will – understand the benefit of behaving in a way that encourages good
behavior by the other. It is inconceivable that our country will realize anything close to its full economic
potential without its possessing first-class electricity and railroad systems. We will do our part to see that they
exist.
In the future, BNSF results will be included in this “regulated utility” section. Aside from the two
businesses having similar underlying economic characteristics, both are logical users of substantial amounts of
debt that is not guaranteed by Berkshire. Both will retain most of their earnings. Both will earn and invest large
sums in good times or bad, though the railroad will display the greater cyclicality. Overall, we expect this
regulated sector to deliver significantly increased earnings over time, albeit at the cost of our investing many tens
– yes, tens – of billions of dollars of incremental equity capital.

The highlight of 2010 was our acquisition of Burlington Northern Santa Fe, a purchase that’s working
out even better than I expected. It now appears that owning this railroad will increase Berkshire’s “normal”
earning power by nearly 40% pre-tax and by well over 30% after-tax. Making this purchase increased our share
count by 6% and used $22 billion of cash. Since we’ve quickly replenished the cash, the economics of this
transaction have turned out very well.

Both of us are enthusiastic about BNSF’s future because railroads have major cost and environmental
advantages over trucking, their main competitor. Last year BNSF moved each ton of freight it carried a record
500 miles on a single gallon of diesel fuel. That’s three times more fuel-efficient than trucking is, which means
our railroad owns an important advantage in operating costs. Concurrently, our country gains because of reduced
greenhouse emissions and a much smaller need for imported oil. When traffic travels by rail, society benefits.

It is the company's biggest acquisition ever.

Berkshire also is taking on about $10 billion of Burlington debt, bringing the size of the deal to $44 billion. That values Burlington at a 30% premium to its closing share price on Monday.

..Last week, the Fort Worth-based railroad reported a 20 percent increase in 2010 revenue and a 38 percent gain in operating income, topping $4.5 billion. That's the most profitable year in the company's long history.

.."The highlight of 2010 was our acquisition of Burlington Northern Santa Fe, a purchase that's working out even better than I expected," Buffett wrote in the second paragraph of a 27-page letter. "It now appears that owning this railroad will increase Berkshire's 'normal' earning power by nearly 40 percent pre-tax and by well over 30 percent after-tax."

..Buffett has been keen on railroads for a while. He began buying a large stake in BNSF in 2006 and owned 22.6 percent of the company when he offered to buy the whole operation in late 2009.


..BNSF may have also benefited from a shakeout in the trucking business, said Nancy Nix, director of the Supply and Value Chain Center at Texas Christian University.

"A lot of small trucking companies went out of business in the recession, and they sold off their equipment," she said. "So as things improve, there will be a shortage of capacity."

BNSF is in good position to pick up that business, because it's an affordable option and rail has a smaller carbon footprint. She said more customers factor in environmental effects, and Buffett touched on the same theme.

With BNSF carrying freight 500 miles on a single gallon of diesel fuel, he said, rail reduces the demand for imported oil, along with greenhouse emissions.

"When traffic travels by rail, society benefits," Buffett wrote.

เนื้อหาของ SD Report ของ GRI

ส่วนสาระสำคัญในมาตรฐาน G3 คือการทำรายงานเพื่อการพัฒนาอย่างยั่งยืน หรือ SD Report โดย GRI กำหนดให้รายงานแบ่งออกเป็นสามส่วนด้วยกัน คือ (i) ข้อมูลของบริษัท (profile) (ii) วิธีบริหารจัดการให้เป็นไปตามเป้าหมาย (management approach) (iii) เครื่องมือชี้วัดประสิทธิผล (performance indicators) นอกจากนี้ยังต้องมีคำมั่นจากผู้บริหารบริษัท หรือ CEO Statement เพื่อเป็นการการันตีความน่าเชื่อถือของรายงาน และต้องมีข้อมูลบริษัท company profile ซึ่งมีรายละเอียดโครงสร้างของบริษัทอยู่ด้วย
