Short squeeze case study

Short seller

post-squeeze, CIGX case in point
what happens after the squeeze? sometimes the price stays up and keeps going up, if there is a reason that fuels demand strongly. but most of the time, the price will go down. it goes down for two reasons: 1) demand falls (as shortsellers and longs stop buying), and 2) shortsellers many times get more aggressive as they try to "make their money back" that they lost in the short squeeze.

but what if you fell in love with the stock as you are researching it?
what if you see a reason to invest in the stock?

that's fine. but invest when the price stabilizes. let the shortsellers work for you, instead of against you.

in the case of CIGX, shortsellers were trying to drive the price down to the $1.20-$1.30 area. this is where they made their mistake by spending too much of their resources doing it and they couldn't sustain the drive down and suddenly they started running low on the amount of stock they could borrow. worse, some shortsellers were covering while others held the door. as they covered, they got off the reg SHO list but the shortsellers that were holding the door for them started running low on stock and THEY were the ones caught in the short squeeze that just happened. since some investors had some $ and could keep up the demand, knew the price point that would cause the shortsellers to lose $ (you can estimate this or subscribe to buyins.net for the trigger price - the average price where people where shorting), and they kept buying until the shortsellers had to start covering. trigger price in the last days of the short squeeze of CIGX was $1.44. this was the whole point of the investors keeping the price above $1.50, then $1.60. after the shortsellers could not get the price lower than $1.60 AND the # of shares that they could borrow dropped, they had to start covering because it was obvious that NOBODY was going to be able to hold the door for them.

so now, where is this price going? i would guess that it would go down to the $1.20-$1.40 price range. if i was in love with this stock, this is where i would buy it again. i think you are going to have plenty of time before the 7/15 FDA advisory committee meets to buy it in this price range.

do remember that the price will get a little fudgy after all the investors have bought in before the FDA meeting. this is usual, when a significant event is expected. the reason price gets soft is that demand falls because all investors have bought in. shortsellers will typically target this time in order to drive the price down.

so if you want to profit by an event, make one buy at a good price to be in the stock and make another buy just before the event occurs in order to take advantage of the soft price. bear in mind that occasionally you won't get a buy in, that occasionally a price does not go soft just before an event. you have to risk this.

this is just advice from someone who has made it their business to watch short squeezes in the last year.
take what you like and leave the rest.

i'm not in love with CIGX but i might invest as a long-term strategy. i might invest some time before the 7/15 meeting.

Short squeeze (SS)

http://www.nasdaqtrader.com/Trader.aspx ... rtInterest

How to Identify and Profit From A Short Squeeze
By s007g, eHow Member

A short squeeze can be a bewildering event to many investors, often causing stocks to move 5,10 even 20% in a single day on seemingly no major news. It is not all that complicated in theory or in practice and determining stocks primed for a short squeeze or benefiting from them as they are occurring can be a very profitable exercise.
.Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

1
LEARN ABOUT SHORT SELLING STOCKS

Briefly, when someone sells a stock short, they are attempting to reverse the old buy-low sell-high philosophy, making it sell-high then buy-low. They sell a stock they think is overpriced (by borrowing it from someone else and selling those shares into the market) and then attempt to re-buy it from the market at a lower price at some later date (and return the newly-purchased shares to whom they were originally borrowed from). It is easier to not concern yourself with the borrowing part, just know tat short sellers want the price to go down.

The amount of people betting against the stock, measured as its short interest is routinely published on financial websites, normally as a percentage of float (all outstanding tradable shares). The higher the percentage, the more people are betting it will go down.

2
LEARN THE DYNAMICS OF A SHORT SQUEEZE

A short squeeze is an event when a heavily shorted stock explodes higher in a very brief time (hours, maybe days). You can think of it as a run on the bank psychologically or better still, a rapid normalizing process when consensus views on the company become too pessimistic. It is largely a function of how markets work and not much of an indicator on the individual company that may be involved.

The mechanics of a squeeze are as follows. If a positive piece of news moves the stock modestly higher, some shorts, facing losses, will be scared out of their positions. (Remember, to close a short position shares must be purchased from the open market.) These purchases push the price of the stock up a little more. This scares more shorts who then cover their positions, which further pushes the prices up. This cycle can continue until a stock moves significantly in a very short time period. Obviously if you had bought before all this transpired, you would have a large, quick gain.

3
FIND COMPANIES SETTING UP FOR A POSSIBLE SHORT SQUEEZE

There is really not much to determining what stocks are candidates for a short squeeze. Heavy short interest, probably above 5% is a good start. More shorts to feed the squeeze means more movement in price. Also important is the amount of available shares. A low number will help fuel the squeeze due to supply and demand principles as fewer shares to purchase will increase in price faster to meet the rising demand than would a greater supply.

4
PREDICT THE CATALYST OF THE SQUEEZE

Definitely the hardest part in predicting a short squeeze is theorizing a near term catalyst that will ignite the process. Earnings reports can sometimes be enough, but it is often unexpected events, like a merger or buyout or an unpopular management team stepping down that spark the rally. This is what makes short squeezes frustrating. It is very easy to identify possible candidates, but often hard to time your moves accordingly.

5
PROFIT FROM THE SQUEEZE

The ways to profit from a short squeeze are numerous, but the most obvious is to buy a stock before the squeeze occurs and wait for it. The disadvantage is that the timing of this strategy is hard to nail and in the mean time you are betting against (more) sophisticated short sellers on the price direction of the stock. As taking profits after a squeeze is more of a short-term trading technique, waiting for a squeeze to occur probably isn't ideal for this type of investor.

I tend to prefer a slightly different tact. The squeeze itself puts large, but very temporary upward pressure on the stock price. As the squeeze ends, that pressure abates and the stock price will drift to a more reasonable point where supply meets demand, usually down, unless the catalyst was really such that the entire value of the company has shifted, in which case all bets are off.

In cases where a squeeze has raised the price to far above your estimate of its worth, it is actually a relatively good time to short the stock. Remember, short squeezes are largely technical events. The short sellers (normally very smart investors) may still have conviction that a stock is overpriced, but cannot afford to take a huge loss and thus close their positions prematurely (the cause of the squeeze to begin with). Using the squeeze to increase your margin of safety, you can use the knowledge, but inflexibility of the short investors to your advantage and short the stock yourself, from a much higher level (meaning more potential profits).

Short Squeeze Potential in Arena as Vivus Panel Date Looms

by: Ruthanne Roussel June 03, 2010

As expected, and as management discussed as a possibility a few weeks ago on the Q1 conference call, the FDA's Endocrinologic and Metabolic Drugs Advisory Committee will review Arena Pharmaceuticals (ARNA)'s weight-loss drug candidate lorcaserin at its already scheduled Sept. 16 meeting. We rate this news as good.

In the small-cap world, it is always especially reassuring when outside agencies behave as management expects them to. While lorcaserin's cardiovascular safety has been extensively studied and independently reviewed, we still were never in the camp that believed that this might give lorcaserin some sort of free pass to FDA approval with no further review. The PDUFA (approval decision) date for lorcaserin is in late October.

The New Drug Application (NDA) for Orexigen's (OREX) competing weight-loss drug candidate Contrave has been accepted for review, the FDA also confirmed on Tuesday, June 1. Contrave's PDUFA date will probably be in early 2011, but Contrave could still also be included in the September committee meeting. OREX management has said they are preparing for an FDA advisory meeting for Contrave, although they have not received word yet that there will definitely be one. Finally, this acceptance confirms our belief that OREX's restated clinical trial data should not affect its filing schedule.

Now to Vivus (VVUS) and its weight-loss candidate Qnexa. As has happened around this time every year for several years now, VVUS CEO Lee Wilson's preplanned stock sales have ruffled a few feathers among investors. However, I think this concern is overblown. Without delving into the particulars of his personal life, Mr. Wilson is of an age where wives, ex-wives, and kids may all have a say in what he does with his wealth. This sales plan has been in place for several years and anyway, other VVUS executives are not selling. For most investors, this is another great argument for my pet strategy of holding a little of each of VVUS, OREX and ARNA instead of worrying about which of the three is best.

Finally, the big news obesity drug investors are all waiting for. On July 15, the FDA's Endocrinologic and Metabolic Drugs Advisory Panel will review VVUS's NDA submitted for Qnexa. The FDA decision is not expected until late October, so there may be time to go back to the drawing board if additional analyses of the existing data are required.

The panel's recommendations are not binding on the FDA, but are usually followed. Watch the FDA web site a few days in advance of the panel meeting for the briefing documents, which may give some hints as to the direction the panel is leaning.

Note that at close of market June 2, VVUS shares were up 4.92% in heavy trading, while ARNA was up 5.9% in above-average trading. As of May 14, VVUS short interest represented 3.5 days to cover, while ARNA short interest represented about 10 days to cover. While VVUS has passed the $1B market cap mark, ARNA is still definitely a small-cap stock, with market cap close to $330M and relatively small float of just under $100M.

Arguably, good news for VVUS could be good for all the weight-loss candidates, if the FDA shows itself more receptive to this class of drug than it has been in the past -- while bad news for VVUS could help its two rivals in the space, particularly ARNA, since lorcaserin is a novel agent with a completely different mechanism of action than Qnexa. Those who like to look for short squeezes would do well to watch ARNA over the coming weeks.

ARNA โดน Short ประมาณ 10 Days to cover

The Next Great Biotech Short Squeeze

I like to short as much as the next investor. Not only is there a palpable frisson in taking a strong position against what the majority of the market thinks (I have seen very few stocks where short interest was over 50% of the float) but, if played correctly, there can be lots of money to be made.

In connection with a side project, I came across a paper from UMass Amherest on how capital markets respond to successes and failures of biotech companies (J. Prod. Innov. Manag., 2004, 21, 297308). Looking at abnormal returns after both positive and negative FDA rulings, the authors concluded that the magnitude of price decline on bad news was greater than for positive news. The best explanation for this is that as humans we react more strongly to negative events than to positive.

While Im happy to make money on the short side, I also like to make money by taking advantage of large short positions that dont work out for the bearsthe short squeeze. Biotech stock prices are relatively uncoupled to broader market conditions, and strongly levered to science. That is, biotech stocks make major moves based on discrete rational events.

The past couple of weeks have provided a couple of exceptional examples of short squeezes in biotech stocks. On a positive recommendation of an FDA advisory panel, shares of Dendreon (DNDN) went from $5.28 on March 28 to $12.93 on March 30. Short interest on DNDN was over 30% prior to this event. The short squeeze raged for another week, with the price peaking just over $25 seven days later.

Similarly, Avanir Pharmaceuticals (AVNR) a company I was happy to short (quite successfully) last October announced on April 18 positive news from a phase 3 study on a treatment for diabetic neuropathic pain. Prior to the 18th, the stock was trading at $1.27 with short interest of 20%. After announcement Wednesday morning, the price kept going up all day, finally peaking Thursday morning at over $6.50.

So, buoyed by this I went looking for other possible short squeeze biotech plays. Using a stock screener I selected biotech stocks with short interest over 20%. From this list I looked at each stock to see if there was a significant clinical event expected in the near future. In many cases, for example a company releasing results of a phase 3 study, there may or may not be a predefined action date, as there would be for an FDA decision. To get a better handle on time frame in these cases I looked for a sharp drop off in open interest for options. I included implied volatility, as this gives a measure of the degree of markets uncertainty in the outcome.

Of the initial list of 30 companies, the ones that showed particular promise, in my opinion, to foment a short squeeze are listed in the table below. Data for short interest (number of shares short divided by float) are from nasdaq.com from March 15. Date refers to expiration month of peak option open interest. Implied volatility was calculated using the options calculator provided by the CBOE.

A good play on these stocks might be to create a watch list and to sit back and watch for press releases. With the high degree of short interest on these stocks, a positive clinical outcome will start a short squeeze as shorts scramble to cover. This is clearly a short term play, maybe as short as a day or two, but it should be good fun. In cases were the shorts have it right and the news is bad, well, as long as nothing is bought prior to any news, no money is lost.

Ticker - Short Interest - Event - "Date" - IV
(AGIX) - 53% - Phase 3 - July - 88%
(COLY) - 36% - Phase 3 - N/A - N/A
(CVTX) - 33% - Phase 3 - May - 95%
(MNTA) - 27% - ANDA - June - 177%
(NKTR) - 27% - Phase 3 - May - 40%
(NRMX) - 35% - Phase 3 - August - 186%
(PPCO) - 26% - Phase 2 - June - 80%

Another Short Squeeze in the Precious Metals

April 12, 2010 – On August 16, 1999, I recounted how legendary traders Jim Fisk and Jay Gould had profited handsomely from a massive short squeeze in gold 130 years earlier. The opportunity they took advantage of arose because of the ongoing monetary turmoil of their day arising from the so-called “greenback”, the irredeemable fiat currency issued by the North to finance President Lincoln’s war with the South. Here is what I wrote about the immediate prospects for gold back then:

“I believe that within two weeks, another gold squeeze will start from the depths of a typically hot and humid New York summer. Like the squeeze of 1869, the market now is far too complacent about both gold and the fiat currency of our day, the Federal Reserve dollar (which differs from a Greenback dollar in name only). And conditions are ripe for a successful squeeze, most notably in the low gold price...”

Gold was $260.90 that day, and nine days later reached its $253 low. From there, gold never looked back because the short squeeze I had expected began.

In the next six weeks gold jumped nearly 30% as a massive squeeze gained momentum pushing shorts to the edge, prompting central bank intervention and the announcement of their bombastic “Washington Agreement on Gold”, which was purposefully and maliciously designed to make it appear they were not going to disrupt the gold market. This event was later described by Eddie George, then Governor of the Bank of England and a director of the BIS, as follows:

“We looked into the abyss if the gold price rose further. A further rise would have taken down one or several trading houses, which might have taken down all the rest in their wake. Therefore at any price, at any cost, the central banks had to quell the gold price, manage it. It was very difficult to get the gold price under control but we have now succeeded. The U.S. Fed was very active in getting the gold price down. So was the U.K.” http://www.gata.org/node/4258

Short Ratio definition :
(or short interest ratio)Number of shares of a security that investors have sold short divided by average daily volume of the security (measured over 30 days or 90 days). There are various interpretations of this ratio. When people short, it is usually (but not always) because they are pessimistic about the security's future performance. Shorting involves buying at at some point however. Hence, some would interpret a high short ratio as an indicator that there will be some buying pressure on the security that would increase its price.

Short % of Float (as of Nov 30, 2010)3: 38.00%
Shares Short (prior month)3: 3.99M

Short Ratio = Shares Short/ Avg Vol (3 month) = 9.12

http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/ ... 313346.xml

CHBT's Richard Essa is Potentially Settting Up One Massive Short Squeeze 3 comments

Share0 We know nothing about this company, but my lord this is one of the most interesting stocks to follow at the moment.

The Company is expected to file its 10k in mid June. They filed last year June 14th.

As of March 31st, 2011 the top ten institutional investors owned 3.9 million shares.

As of the last proxy management owned 9.2 million shares.

Richard Essa just announced he is up to 4.0 million shares.

Total shares outstanding as of last 10Q was approximately 22.2 million.

That leaves a float of around 5.1 million shares.

Short interest as of May 13th was 4.7 million.

If none of the management, Richard, or top ten shareholders sell upon filing 10k and Richard buys 500,000 more shares there will not be enough shares in the float for the shorts to cover period.

If this company files its 10k in June this could cause one of the craziest short squeezes we have seen in market. The shorts may not even have enough shares in the float to cover if Richard keeps up his activity. If the company doesn't file Richard will not be a happy camper. I have this one on my radar as this could get very interesting either way.

We have no position in the company, but option value I am almost tempted to go long, but almost seems to good to be true.
