'Coal plants best choice for now'

Egat plans to build coal power facilities in Songkhla, Krabi in 2016, 2019

DESPITE PUBLIC concern about their environmental impact, coal-fired power plants have been emerging as a vital force for the country's energy security. This fact is evident in the vision of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand, which believes that "clean-coal" technology would be a perfect solution for this country.

"Coal-fired power plants will build energy security," said Anuchart Palakawongse na Ayudhya, Egat director of environmental projects. "With 'clean-coal' technology, coal will be the best energy source for the country's power generation in the next one or two decades." He revealed that Egat planned to boost coal as the energy source for power generation from 14 per cent to 23 per cent by 2030.

Anuchart was speaking as an Egat team led reporters on a visit to Germany to inspect the Schwarze Pumpe power plant, which uses |lignite, the Power Plant of Mainova, which relies on coal, and the Binselberg Wind Park, where electricity is generated by wind energy. The trip offered a glimpse of how a new-generation lignite-fired power plants can be "friendly" to the environment. Binselberg Wind Park can generate up to 9,000 megawatts of electricity a year with its two turbine sets. It "lowers" carbon dioxide emissions by 5,800 tonnes every year.

Egat has emphasised that while it is trying to push for the use of a coal-fired power plant in Krabi, it has not lost focus on renewable-energy |promotion. "We will continue to boost the percentage of renewable energy in power generation too. It should rise from 14 per cent now to 28 per cent by 2030," said Wiwat Chancherngpanich, Egat's assistant governor for power plant construction.

Like Anuchart, Wiwat believes that coal is a good choice for electricity generating, saying production costs range from Bt2.8 to Bt3 per unit. "When using wind energy, the cost is between Bt5 and Bt6 per unit," he pointed out. "When using solar energy, the cost ranges between Bt8 and Bt9 per unit." He also said that renewable energy was still not very stable as a source of power generation. "For example, if we stick to solar energy, we must understand that we may get just four or five hours of sunlight on some days," Wiwat said.

Egat's plan to set up a coal-fired power plant in Krabi, however, has drawn opposition from locals and environmentalists. They have highlighted what |happened to people living near the lignite-fired Mae Moh Power Plant in Lampang. There, locals have been struggling with pollution and related health issues. According to Anuchart, the |Mae Moh plant has been improved and has reduced its sulphur dioxide emissions significantly. He said that Egat recognised that the Mae Moh plant was old and it would be closed soon. "As for our new projects, we should be able to do at least as well as Germany," he said. For example, for the planned coal-fired power plant in Krabi, he said that Egat would spend up to Bt800 million on constructing a tunnel for coal transportation along a stretch that went past a mangrove forest.

He said that the transportation system would be closed in order to prevent environmental impacts along the route. Boats used for coal transportation would stay clear of coral reefs off Phi Phi Island and Lanta Island. Dust particles from the plant's emissions would be 30 milligrammes per cubic metre of air, much lower than the standard 80 milligrammes per cubic metre of air. Sulphur dioxide emissions would also be far below the standard requirement.

"Our consulting firm is in the process of gathering people's opinions," Anuchart said. He said that if the Bt50 billion plant got Cabinet approval, its construction would start in 2016 and finish in 2019. He said that the plant - which would replace an old plant at the same location - would use sub-bituminus coal, an "eco-friendly" raw material. That plant and two plants planned for Songkhla were crucial in ensuring electricity security in the South.

"We still need coal-fired power plants," Anuchart said.

However, the many protests mean there are now question marks over whether the Krabi and Songkhla plants will go ahead. And if they are not constructed, would Egat be able to find enough energy to meet needs?

Wiwat said that if the power plants could not use coal to produce power, Egat would have to consider other options such as liquefied natural gas, which would cause the electricity-producing cost to increase by Bt2-3. The other option would be to buy energy from other sources such as dams in Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia. If that happened, Wiwat said the country would become dependant on other countries to meet its energy requirements.

http://www.businessinsider.com.au/apple ... rey-2015-2
Apple CEO Tim Cook just announced that the company is building a gigantic solar farm near Monterey, south of San Francisco.

The facility will cover 1,300 acres and Cook said that it would be more than enough to power its new campus in Cupertino, which is being built right now. It will cost $US850 million to build, but Cook said it would save the company money on energy costs in the long run.

He also joked that he realised he was talking at a financial conference, but he believes that Apple has to continue to help society, as that is the company’s highest goal. “We’re thrilled to continue on a course of doing things that make the world better than we found it,” he told investors. He also said, “We know at Apple that climate change is real…. The time for change is now.”

Kingdom built on oil foresees fossil fuel phase-out this century

Kingdom built on oil foresees fossil fuel phase-out this century

Pilita Clark in Paris

Saudi Arabia, the world’s largest crude exporter, could phase out the use of fossil fuels by the middle of this century, Ali al-Naimi, the kingdom’s oil minister, said on Thursday.

The statement represents a stunning admission by a nation whose wealth, power and outsize influence in the world are predicated on its vast reserves of crude oil.

High quality global journalism requires investment. Please share this article with others using the link below, do not cut & paste the article. See our Ts&Cs and Copyright Policy for more detail. Mr Naimi, whose comments on oil supply routinely move markets, told a conference in Paris on business and climate change: “In Saudi Arabia, we recognise that eventually, one of these days, we are not going to need fossil fuels. I don’t know when, in 2040, 2050 or thereafter.”

For that reason, he said, the kingdom planned to become a “global power in solar and wind energy” and could start exporting electricity instead of fossil fuels in coming years.

Many in the energy industry would find his target of a 2040 phase-out too ambitious. Saudi Arabia is the largest consumer of petroleum in the Middle East, and more than 25 per cent of its total crude production — more than 10m barrels a day — is used domestically.

A 2012 Citigroup report said that if Saudi oil demand continued to grow at current rates, the country could be a net oil importer by 2030.

But while acknowledging that Saudi Arabia would one day stop using oil, gas and coal, Mr Naimi said calls to leave the bulk of the world's known fossil fuels in the ground to avoid risky levels of climate change needed to be put "in the back of our heads for a while".

"Can you afford that today?" he asked other conference speakers, including British economist, Nick Stern, author of a 2006 UK government report on the economics of climate change. "It may be a great objective but it is going to take a long time."

With more than 1 billion people globally still lacking access to electricity, there would be strong demand for fossil fuels for years to come, he said, adding that more work was needed to find ways to burn oil, coal and gas without releasing warming carbon dioxide.

Read MoreSaudi Arabia: More to the market than oil

Saudi Arabia, like other Gulf states that burn a lot of oil domestically, has long said it plans to use more renewable power.

Officials in the kingdom declared three years ago they had plans to build so many solar plants they would be able to export solar electricity. But the recent fall in oil prices has increased doubts about the fate of such schemes.

Mr Naimi said he did not think lower crude prices would make solar power uneconomic. "I believe solar will be even more economic than fossil fuels," he said.

The minister's comments come as Paris prepares to host UN talks in December where nearly 200 countries are due to agree a global climate pact.

Ahead of that meeting, the leaders of Germany and France have called for an end to carbon emissions this century.

World leaders have already agreed in previous UN talks to curb emissions enough to avoid global temperatures warming more than two degrees Celsius compared with pre-industrial times.

But Mr Stern said the action countries had pledged in the lead-up to the Paris meeting so far would not be enough to put the world on a path to meeting the two degree target. It was therefore crucial for any agreement signed in Paris to include measures that required countries to ramp up their climate actions in future, he said.

offshore!

http://www.manager.co.th/Local/ViewNews ... 0000078155

Project Sunroof

https://www.google.com/get/sunroof/about/
About Project Sunroof

Why are we doing this?

Why are we doing this?
As the price of installing solar has gotten less expensive, more homeowners are turning to it as a possible option for decreasing their energy bill. We want to make installing solar panels easy and understandable for anyone.

Project Sunroof puts Google's expansive data in mapping and computing resources to use, helping calculate the best solar plan for you.

How it works

Selecting a single house from Google Maps.
When you enter your address, Project Sunroof looks up your home in Google Maps and combines that information with other databases to create your personalized roof analysis.

Don't worry: Project Sunroof doesn't give the address to anybody else unless you ask it to.

Customizing for your roof

Customizing for Your Roof
Project Sunroof computes how much sunlight hits your roof in a year. It takes into account:

Google's database of aerial imagery and maps
3D modeling of your roof
Shadows cast by nearby structures and trees
All possible sun positions over the course of a year
Historical cloud and temperature patterns that might affect solar energy production
Choose what you need

Choose what you want to do
Project Sunroof recommends an installation size to generate close to 100% of your electricity use, based on roof size, the amount of sun hitting the roof, and your electricity bill.

Solar panel installations come in sizes measured in kilowatts (kW). When discussing solar installation with your providers, the recommended installation size (in kW) is a good starting point for a more fine-tuned estimate of total costs and benefits.

Choose what you want to do
We recommend an installation that covers less than 100% of your electrical usage because, in most areas, there is little financial benefit to producing more power than you can consume.

Hint: Change the amount of your average electrical bill with the bill slider to get a more accurate, customized estimate for your house.

Computing your savings

Compute your savings
Project Sunroof uses current solar industry pricing data to run the numbers on leasing, taking a loan, or buying solar panels for your house to help you choose what's best for you.

Compute your savings
Project Sunroof also compiles the following incentives to calculate your final cost:

Federal and state tax credits
Utility rebates
Renewable energy credits and net metering
Find out more about Project Sunroof's financial estimates

Taking next steps

Taking the next steps
If you'd like to know more or to get started on going solar, Project Sunroof can put you in touch with solar providers who serve your area.

Project Sunroof will only send information you provide to solar providers that you selected.

FAQ

How do I know if solar power might be right for me?

A few key factors go a long way in determining whether solar power can save you money. You could be a great candidate for rooftop solar if:

You own your home
You have a roof that isn't heavily shaded and is in good condition
Your home uses at least a moderate amount of electricity
You have a good credit score (this matters only if you prefer to finance your system)
You live in one of the roughly 35 states with good solar policy
About solar power

How does solar photovoltaic energy work?

Photovoltaic (PV) solar panels harness the power of the sun by converting photons in sunlight into electricity. This creates an electric current that can power appliances in your home or be put back into the grid. Since their energy source is the sun, solar panels produce electricity without emitting carbon. While it takes energy to make solar panels themselves, over time, most solar installations will produce 15x-60x the energy required to make the solar panels themselves. (source)

Are solar power installations reliable?

Most solar installations will require little maintenance for decades. There are no moving parts to wear out.

How much maintenance is required?

Very little. Inverters may need replacing, which normally occurs after the 10+ year warranty term. In dusty environments, periodic washing of the panels may help increase electricity production.

How long do solar systems last?

A high quality solar installation can last more than 30 years.

What if there is a cloudy day?

Solar systems produce less electricity on cloudy days. The great majority of homes with solar still connect to the electric grid, drawing power from the grid when needed.

What if I'm not using electricity when the system is producing power?

In many U.S. states there is a policy called "Net Metering" which means the utility credits a homeowner for solar energy that is not consumed by the home. Those net metering credits are used up when the home takes power from the utility.

Financial considerations

What are the risks to getting solar power?

As with any investment, there are some risks, though a well-installed system will make most risks extremely rare. Risks include PV systems catching fire, installations leading to roof leaks, theft, obsolescence, and hail damage and/or wind damage to the solar system itself.

Fast-growing trees can shade solar installations, reducing production over time. Utilities can change how much they charge their customers for electricity, changing the savings from solar.

Policies that are beneficial to solar installations may change (e.g., Net Metering).

Solar power and your home

What makes a roof good for solar?

The best solar roofs have large areas with South or Southwest exposure, little shade, and a roof in good condition.

What if my roof is really old?

If your roof needs to be replaced, it may make sense to replace the roof and install solar at the same time. Some providers offer a service to remove and replace a solar installation if you get a new roof in the future.

What if I have to move after a few years?

This varies by solar company, but typically you'll have the option to transfer a financed system to the new homeowner (with their consent), or buy out the rest of the contract and leave the system with the homeowner or even bring it with you for installation in your next home. If you purchase the solar system, it's yours to handle how you would like.

Why are some parts of the roof sunnier than others?

Roof orientation matters. In the U.S., north-facing roof faces get less sun than south-facing roofs. Shading also plays a big role, whether from trees, chimneys, or nearby buildings.

What if I want to buy a high power consumption device in the future, such as a swimming pool or EV? Can I oversize my system?

Sometimes you can. Different utilities have different rules on this question. Some utilities may limit the installation size to a proportion (e.g., 120%) of the electricity consumed over the prior year.

What if I own a multifamily home?

Depending on your home owner's association, you may still be able to get solar for your home. Project Sunroof is not always accurate in knowing which portion of the roof belongs to which address or homeowners.

What if I rent an apartment or rent my home?

Most solar solutions are geared toward homeowners, but there are some options for renters. For example, some utilities offer green energy options, and in some states community solar programs allow people to buy solar power from remote solar installations.

Solar power installation and operations

What permits and approvals are required?

Most municipalities require permits in order to install solar, and that may also require an inspection of the installation itself.

Utilities also must approve the system to make sure it's connected to the grid in an electrically safe and compliant manner.

See our guide for what to expect during an installation.

How will I know how well my solar installation is performing?

Most solar providers offer monitoring solutions, viewable through the Internet, a mobile App, and/or an in-home display.

What if it snows on solar panels?

In climates warm enough to melt the snow, you can just wait until the snow melts. If you need to clear the panels, there are tools that can help.

Project Sunroof technology

Why does this tool give a different estimate of solar energy production than the solar company who gave me a proposal? Or the PVWatts tool from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL)?

Solar radiation estimates depend on many factors, such as shading, typical weather in your area and equipment used. NREL, your solar provider, Project Sunroof and others may have different estimates, leading to different outputs. Additionally, Project Sunroof mapping data may be from a different period in time than other estimates, and thus may not show recent growth or removal of trees.

Many solar providers will give you a final solar production estimate based on shade readings they take while inspecting your roof.

For solar providers

I'm a solar provider and interested in reaching potential solar customers. How can I be a part of Project Sunroof?

Renewable mania

Honeymoon period

An Inconvenient truth
(Amazing Thailand)

ถือว่าผมโชคดีที่ได้กำไรพอสมควรจากการลงทุนthemeนี้ จากการที่ being right for a wrong reason.
"Value has a value only if its value is valued"
