Latin American E-Commerce Purchases Hit New All-Time Highs. Here's the Biggest Winner
COVID-19 drove retail shoppers online, but not all e-commerce platforms were created equal.

E-commerce in Latin America is still in its early innings, with online purchases accounting for just 4% of total retail sales in 2019. By contrast, digital purchases represented about 11% of total sales in the U.S. during the same period, showing that there's plenty of room for growth in the nascent market.

The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated adoption of e-commerce in many markets around the world. Consumers opted to order online and have packages delivered rather than risk venturing out and contracting the disease.

This was especially true in Latin America, where 13 million consumers made an e-commerce purchase for the first time last quarter, according to payment processor Visa.

While many digital sellers benefitted from this shift in consumer behavior, one platform stands out: MercadoLibre (NASDAQ:MELI).

First, a little perspective
Consumers in Latin America went all-in with e-commerce as the region reeled from the impact of the novel coronavirus. During May alone, downloads of shopping apps in the region grew 43% year over year, according to data provided by Apptopia.

Two countries, Brazil and Mexico, accounted for the majority of the growth, with shopping app downloads increasing by 68% and 39% year over year, respectively.

Among the 19 most popular apps tracked by Apptopia, the year-to-date numbers were even more eye-catching, as app installations in Brazil grew 99% compared to the prior-year period, while those in Chile jumped 59%.

The hometown favorite
MercadoLibre absolutely dominated the competition, garnering more mobile app sessions than its next two competitors combined between June 2019 and May 2020. Since the report focused primarily on Latin American e-commerce, Amazon.com (NASDAQ:AMZN) wasn't included in the study. However, even if it had been, that wouldn't have changed MercadoLibre's first-place ranking, as the company had 52% more mobile app sessions during the period than Amazon.

The strong demand for its app translated to robust results for MercadoLibre. During the first quarter, the company reported that revenue grew 71% year over year in local currencies, though that number was boosted by strong growth in digital payments. Online sales grew 62% as adoption of e-commerce ramped up.

How do you want to pay for that?
The aforementioned payments also helped strengthen the company's ecosystem. Latin America has historically been cash-based, so millions of residents still don't have a bank account or a credit card.

MercadoLibre developed Mercado Pago, a payment system modeled after PayPal, that let consumers add money to their digital account at a network of locations like convenience stores. By providing a way to pay for online purchases, the company added another growth engine to its network. Mercado Pago became so popular with users that it soon expanded beyond MercadoLibre's platform to other digital sellers, eventually making the jump to brick-and-mortar stores.

The payments business is growing even faster than e-commerce, with fintech revenue soaring 83% year over year in local currency.

The combination of its industry-leading e-commerce platform and digital payments form a virtuous cycle that should support MercadoLibre's growth for years to come.

Paying for quality
MercadoLibre stock recently hit all-time highs on the strength of its position in the region and the accelerating adoption of e-commerce in Latin America. As a result, the stock is by no means cheap, trading at 19 times trailing-12-month sales and a forward valuation of 15 -- when a reasonable price-to-sales ratio is generally considered to be between one and two.

However, considering the significant pivot toward e-commerce and digital payments in the region, and MercadoLibre's dominant position in each, investors would do well to remember the adage, "You get what you pay for."

SAO PAULO, Sept 24 (Reuters) - Goldman Sachs Group Inc is extending a 400 million reais ($72.61 million) credit line to finance e-commerce firm MercadoLibre in giving loans to small and mid-sized companies in Brazil, according to a statement on Thursday.

The loans will be extended through MercadoLibre's financial services arm, Mercado Pago.

Goldman Sachs said the credit line is one of the biggest it has provided to a financial startup in Brazil. Last year, Goldman Sachs extended a $125 million loan to MercadoLibre in Mexico.

Mercado Pago operates in Brazil, Argentina and Mexico.

In April, Mercado Pago said it was extending a 600 million reais credit line to help small businesses weather the economic plunge caused by the coronavirus pandemic. ($1 = 5.5087 reais) (Reporting by Carolina Mandl; editing by Jonathan Oatis)

Expect the Unexpected.

Payments is a growth engine
In 2003, the company realized it was missing out on additional online sales because customers had no way to pay for products electronically, so it introduced its payment service called Mercado Pago. This service has not only become the primary way shoppers pay for goods on the platform, but it's also become a popular way to buy goods at local shops.

Last quarter, Mercado Pago facilitated 405 million transactions for 52 million people, representing $11.2 billion in goods and services purchased, with more than half of the value spent on off-platform transactions. The local currency transaction value grew at an amazing triple-digit rate year over year.

Second-quarter revenue from its fintech segment hit $297 million, up 34% year over year (86% in local currency). This segment is made up of payment fees, fees from its credit services, and the sale of its point-of-sale devices.

But there's still plenty of upside. With much of the population still largely unbanked or underbanked, it leaves a wide-open opportunity for the company to expand its fintech business even more.

Fintech has a bright future
With the success of its payments offering, management is focused on expanding Mercado Pago to be "a powerful disruptive provider of end-to-end financial technology solutions." It has already made significant strides toward this goal and offers the following services to its core regions:

In-store payments through a point-of-sale device or QR code
A mobile digital wallet for peer-to-peer payments and paying utility or mobile phone bills
Pre-paid and co-branded credit cards
Merchant credits on its marketplace
A money market fund for investing the cash in customers' mobile wallets
With significant investments in its information technology, this tech-forward E-tailer looks to lead the way with easily accessible online banking solutions as well.

Mercado Pago มี Ant เป็น role model

Transactions on the platform of Mercado Pago, the finance arm of MercadoLibre MELI.O, more than doubled in the second quarter, and its CEO sees China's Alibaba 9988.HK and its huge payment affiliate, Ant Group, as a model to follow.

Super growth stock :)

The step up in online purchasing has been stable across all sites in the region. MercadoLibre's consolidated gross merchandise volume growth accelerated to 117% year on year on an FX-neutral basis. At the regional level, Brazil and Argentina accelerated to 74% and 242% year on year on an FX-neutral basis, respectively. Mexico's performance is notable given how COVID-19 impacted the region, delivering yet another quarter of GMV growth above 100% year on year, also on an FX-neutral basis.

Amazon Marks Its Biggest Expansion In Brazil Since 2012: Reuters

Amazon Inc (NASDAQ: AMZN) has expanded its e-commerce logistics centers in Brazil to eight, according to a Reuters report on Monday.

What Happened: The company has added three new centers in the states of Minas Gerais and Rio Grande do Sul and the capital city of Brasilia.

Amazon's distribution space in the country is enhanced by an additional 75,000 square meters with the expansion, and it would also add 1,500 direct jobs, the Jeff Bezos-led company said, as per Reuters. This is reportedly Amazon's largest expansion in Brazil since it first started operations in the country in 2012.

Amazon Brazil Chief Executive Officer Alex Szapiro told Reuters that the company would be able to make two-day prime deliveries to more than 500 cities, a 25% increase compared to the previous outreach of 400 cities, with the latest addition of logistics centers.

Why Does It Matter: Amazon’s investment is spurred by the growing e-commerce business in the region, primarily due to lockdowns and social distancing.

Domestic competitor Mercadolibre Inc (NASDAQ: MELI) reported a 109.3% YoY revenue growth from the commerce business segment for the third quarter of 2020.

With over 5.6 million COVID-19 infected cases, Brazil is trailing only behind the U.S. and India, as per data from Johns Hopkins University.

In October, Amazon invested $100 million for setting up two fulfillment centers, along with a support building, in Mexico.

SAO PAULO, Nov 12 (Reuters) - Mercadolibre Inc announced the opening of five logistics hubs throughout southeastern Brazil on Thursday, as the Argentine e-commerce giant seeks to accommodate a rapid shift to online shopping during the coronavirus pandemic.

The new hubs - three in greater Sao Paulo, one in the state of Minas Gerais and one in the state of Santa Catarina - double the company's logistics capacity in South America's largest nation, the firm said.

The units are slated to officially begin operating over the next few months. Mercado Livre, as Mercadolibre is known in Brazil, will manage the stock of items being sold by vendors that use the e-commerce platform, a centralized model meant to boost efficiency and reduce delivery times.

E-commerce was growing fast in Brazil even before the coronavirus pandemic slowed in-person purchasing to a crawl. In addition to Mercado Livre, Amazon.com Inc has built up its logistics infrastructure here in recent years, as have local incumbents like Magazine Luiza SA and B2W Cia Digital SA. Bank of America pushes its price objective on Buy-rated MercadoLibre (MELI +0.9%) up to $2,100.
The firm turns constructive on MercadoLibre by lifting its gross merchandise volume, total payments volume and EPS projections to reflect what it anticipates to be accelerating market share gains for MELI in key markets.
BofA's price objective is based on a sum-of-the parts mix of the marketplace business at 1.4X GMV and fintech at 0.4X TPV.
"Our optimism is driven by still-low penetration, surging new users, retention, frequency efforts, firstparty consumables and gap offerings, sharper pricing, cross-border efforts, new wallet and fintech functionality, improving credit algorithms, Pix, and increasingly compelling cross-channel and loyalty capabilities."
