As of September 2010, Buffett’s unrealized gains on KO were $10.4 billion. This comes out to a 766% increase in value. This is one of Buffett’s greatest investing triumphs.

2. American Express (NYSE: AXP)

In 1964, the “salad oil scandal,” where a vegetable oil company obtained massive loans through falsified collateral rocked American Express, which had provided warehouses and vouched for the company’s inventory. This event ended up costing the company approximately $58 million and much of its reputation. In the period after the scandal broke, investors couldn’t sell AXP shares fast enough, and the stock lost 50% of its value in a short time, falling to $35 per share. Buffett, however, saw this moment of panic for just what it was – a drawback for an otherwise very stable company with long-term growth potential.

The Science of Hitting was a book that attracted Warren Buffet’s attention. The book was written by Ted Williams, one of the greatest baseball hitters of all times. His impact on the game, both as a player and as an inspiration to generations of hitters who followed, continues to this day. Williams combined the following:

* Power (521 lifetime home runs)
* Patience (he received more walks than any batter in his day); and
* Control (a .344 lifetime average) that no player had ever done before.

His contribution to the game was to reduce the waiting time to hit a perfect pitch; he said that a good hitter can hit a pitch that is over the plate three times better than a great hitter with a questionable ball in a tough spot.

Buffet extends the same reasoning to stock picking.

The stock market is like a major league pitcher who fires thousands of pitches a day, with each pitch representing a certain stock at a certain price. As the batter, you must decide which of the thousands of pitches to swing at, and which you will let whiz by. What distinguishes you from a baseball player, however, is that you don’t ever have to swing. The game of investing doesn’t force you to take the bat off your shoulder and swing, unlike the batter in the stadium. No one will “call you out”. Buffet says:

“In investments, there’s no such thing as a called strike. You can stand there at the plate and the pitcher can throw the ball right down the middle, and if it’s General Motors at $47 and you don’t know enough to decide General Motors at $47, you let it go right on by and no one’s going to call a strike. The only way you can have a strike is to swing and miss.”

Warren Buffet is a great admirer of Ted Williams and, on several occasions, has shared William’s disciplined approach with Berkshire’s holders.

Williams would wait for a specific pitch (in an area of the plate where he knew he had a high probability of making contact with the ball) before swinging. It is said that this discipline enabled Williams to have a higher lifetime batting average than the average player.

Like Ted Williams, I believe that a good investor can make three times more profit on a good stock, than a great investor investing in a questionable asset in a tough spot.

Citing the oft-repeated Coco-Cola example he said: it's "very easy for me to come to a conclusion as to what it will look like economically in five or 10 years, and it's not easy for me to come to a conclusion about Apple."

While Apple stocks have been soaring, Berkshire Hathaway has shied away from investing in them. Buffett told Bloomberg: "Even though Apple may have the most wonderful future in the world, I'm not capable of bringing any drink to that particular party and evaluating that future."

I could spend all my time thinking about technology for the next year and still not be the 100th, 1,000th or even the 10,000th smartest guy in the country in analyzing those businesses. In effect, that's a 7- or 8-foot bar that I can't clear. There are people who can, but I can't."
