FORBES ASIA debuts its list of Thailand's 40 richest businesspeople at a turbulent time for the country and its tycoons. Billionaire Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who ranks fourth among the 40, resigned in April under pressure from vocal opponents outraged that he and his family sold their 49.6% stake in telecom giant Shin Corp. tax free to Singaporean investors. He is back as caretaker prime minister. The nation's wealthiest citizen, Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi, took his Thai Beverage public in Singapore in May after protesters objected to an alcohol company listing in Thailand. The country's stock market index is down 5% year-to-date. The total net worth of these rich listers is just $20 billion, $6 billion less than the net of Malaysia's 40 Richest. Despite all the gloom, Thailand has rebounded nicely from the 1997 Asian crisis, with many fortunes recovering. Today the country has much going for it, including a young and growing population that is already boosting some consumer businesses and a strong manufacturing base, particularly in the automotive sector. Both trends are well reflected on the list.
