Competitiveness of ethylene-based PVC would likely improve in China against
carbide-based PVC, as ethylene import costs would likely decline after
revaluation of Chinese Yuan against the dollar, industry sources said Friday.
On Thursday, the People's Bank of China said the Chinese central bank would
revaluate its currency against the US dollar at 8.11 compared with 8.28
before. Carbide-based PVC prices in China are relatively cheaper than
ethylene-based PVC. Chinese PVC makers procure carbide domestically, while
they import ethylene.

Chinese PVC demand falls on weakening property market

A clampdown on property speculation in China and a resulting slowdown in the building of new units has led to falling demand for polyvinyl chloride (PVC), according to domestic producers.
PVC is used to manufacture pipes and profiles for the construction industry, but producers were unable to say how much demand had dropped by.
Property sales in Shanghai fell to 200-300 units/day in June from 700-800 units/day in June 2004, according to the newspaper China Daily. Property prices had also fallen in Nanjing and Hangzhou.
This was due to slew of measures that the government introduced to cool the overheated property sector, including higher interest rates on mortgage loans in March 2005 and new taxes and credit controls in May.
Apart from falling demand, China was also facing a PVC oversupply problem as many new plants were coming onstream in 2005. This was forcing some producers to export PVC.
A producer said that his company had exported more than 600 tonne to five countries in Southeast Asia, and planned to increase this to more than 1,000 tonne/month. Chinese PVC exports increased by 43% to 28,846 tonne in the first five months of 2005 compared with the same period of 2004.
The producer said that a shake-up in the PVC industry was imminent and small producers would be forced to close down in the face of stiff competition.
